Spiritual and Adventure Retreat

Celebrated in Hindu mythology and religion, the Garhwal Himalayas are said to be the "Abode of the Gods." The river Ganges has its sources at the sacred shrine of Gangotri and rushes down to the plains in a torrential fury. The Shivalik Himalayas are said to represent the matted rocks of Lord Shiva, trying to calm her descent as she meanders down towards Rishikesh, a town internationally famous for its meditation and yoga ashrams and the temple town of Haridwar. Just 30 km upstream on the west bank of the Ganges amidst luxuriant forests, Wanderlust has set up India's most eco-friendly resort "Ganga Banks". So whether the search is spiritual, for solace or life adventure, this is where you get it all.

Itinerary

Drive to Rishikesh or optionally board the train up to Haridwar and transfer to Ganga Banks (1 hour), situated 260 km away at the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas. It is here that the holy river Ganges enters the plains after its journey down from the Himalayas. A renowned centre for Yogic discipline - Rishikesh is dotted with shrines. Drive 30 km through Sal forest to the luxurious riverside resort "Ganga Banks". Check into private river-facing cottages. Rest of the day at leisure to enjoy jungle walks or sunbathe on the resort's private silver sands beach or the "jungle pool". Overnight Ganga Banks.

After a late breakfast, drive down to Rishikesh, a sight-seeing tour of the temples, ashrams and the famous Trans-Meditation Centre where the "Beatles" lived for a year. Optionally, drive to Haridwar to witness the priests performing the evening `Ganga Aarti" at Hari-Ki-Pauri, where Lord Vishnu is believed to have left his footprint. Visit the colorful and interesting bazaar. Evening relaxes at the river beach with a bonfire and beach dinner. Overnight Ganga Banks.

Morning enjoy a gentle rafting or floating trip on the Ganges right up to Rishikesh to see the way of life in the Himalayan foothills. Later, drive up on an astonishingly beautiful 40 km stretch to Devprayag. Luxuriant forest runs down to the water's edge which in many places is fringed with silver sand beaches, in places the blue-green mystical river rushes over foaming rapids. Devprayag is an important pilgrimage spot, for here is the confluence of the rivers Bhagirathi and Alaknanda. It is below Devprayag that the river becomes the Ganga proper. Evening at leisure at Ganga Banks. Overnight Ganga Banks.

Drive to Corbett National Park (4 hrs) via the holiest town of Haridwar. Check into your jungle resort. Commence park safari on elephant back accompanied by a naturalist. Evening bonfire and bar-be-cue with a "Chota Peg". Overnight Corbett.

Morning and evening park visits to see a variety of wildlife in jeeps and elephant back. Overnight Corbett.

Early morning repeat safari. Later drive to Delhi. Overnight Waterbanks lakeside resort for cocktails and bar-be-cue.

Depart Delhi.
